Occasionally, I'm asked to do artist in residence programs with students at schools. I really enjoy this, as I get to work one-on-one with each student involved in the project. Together, we brainstorm a theme and then I create a plan around that theme. Based on our brainstorming, I create a design which will be constructed and painted as permanent piece of artwork for the school. One of my favorites is to build a “shadow box” illustration. It's similar to a “cut paper” illustration, but instead of paper, we use Masonite (hard board) which is drawn on, cut out on a scroll saw, and then painted by the students and sometimes even some of the staff members. To be able to create something of this nature, we usually enlist the services of parents, volunteers, and shop classes who have scroll saws. It then becomes an even more community based project. I then take the hundreds of pieces and assemble them in a shadow box which is made from painted 2x8’s and this is mounted on a wall in the school. Below is an example of one I worked on with students from the Town of Webb Schools in Old Forge, NY. They had a great time. We laughed a lot, worked hard, and created a wonderful piece of Adirondack art. Just recently, I've been asked to return and create another one! This time, we'll be doing a tessellation project based on the Adirondack theme. I'm looking forward to it and will post pictures as soon as it's completed.
